Die RIM-8 Talos war eine Langstrecken-Boden-Luft-Rakete (SAM) und eine der ersten SAMs, die auf den Schiffen der US Navy eingesetzt worden sind. Die Talos nutzte eine Radarstrahlführung zur Annäherung an ihr Ziel und eine halbaktive Radarzielsuche (SARH) zur Endzielführung. Die vier Antennen um die Nase herum waren SARH-Empfänger, die als kontinuierliches Welleninterferometer fungierten. Ein Feststoffraketentriebwerk sorgte für den Startschub, ein Staustrahltriebwerk (Ramjet) trieb den Flug zum Ziel an, wobei der Sprengkopf als Verdichter für den Ramjet diente.
