Mô tả
This class formed the backbone of the US submarine fleet for much of the cold war. It is an evolution of the Permit design, but focused on improved quieting, habitability and optimized for ELINT missions with increased space for electronics and a larger sail permitting more masts to be accommodated. The Sturgeon-class underwent many upgrades throughout its production run, with earlier "Short-hull" models being somewhat less quiet and with less sophisticated ESM equipment compared to the last 9 "Long-hull" models. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, many Sturgeons were still using the Mark 37 and Mark 16 torpedo combination, although during the 1970s most boats would be upgraded or built with Mk-48, BQR-25 STASS, and BQQ-5 sonars.
