Description
Developed from the Soviet Riga-class ASW frigate provided to the PRC before the Sino-Soviet split. The Chengdu class improves on the surface warfare capability by substituting the original triple torpedo tubes with a twin launcher for the Styx-derived Safflower missile. ASW capability is very weak, comprising only twin RBU-1200 ASW mortars. This class forms the basis from which all subsequent PLAN frigates have evolved.
