These ships are the successors to the Chengdu class, and mainly improves on the surface warfare capability by doubling the missile complement to four CSS-N-2 Safflower SSMs. AAW armament is marginally improved by mounting 6 37mm mounts as opposed to only 2 on the Chengdu. ASW capability remains very weak, comprising only twin FQF-1200 ASW mortars and depth charge throwers.
