Description
The Yukan-class LSTs (Type 072) are the first generation of new tank landing ships for the PLAN, and replaced ancient WWII era American landing vessels in the amphibious assault support role. Like many other landing ships, these vessels are armed with medium caliber guns to defend themselves and support an amphibious landing, given that these ships must beach themselves to deploy vehicles from the front ramp. Alternatively, these ships can deploy landing craft, and can carry a significant cargo payload on the deck as well.
