Description
The Oberon class was a class of 27 British-designed diesel-electric attack and patrol submarines developed as an improved follow-on to the Porpoise class, using stronger hull materials and upgraded equipment. The Royal Australian Navy ordered six Oberon-class submarines in two batches, with minor modifications from the Royal Navy standard, most notably using US weapons in the form of the Mark 37 torpedo.\n\nThe Royal Australian Navy started an upgrade program (SWUP) in the late 1970s to upgrade the sensors and armament of the submarines to face expected threats of the 1980s and beyond. This includes USN Mark 48 torpedoes, MicroPUFFS flanking array passive sonar, and eventually the UGM-84 submarine Harpoon missile, and all six ships were upgraded with these by 1985.
