Description
The Oberon class was a class of 27 British-designed diesel-electric attack and patrol submarines developed as an improved follow-on to the Porpoise class, using stronger hull materials and upgraded equipment. The Royal Canadian Navy ordered three Oberon-class submarines in two batches, with minor modifications from the Royal Navy standard, most notably using US weapons in the form of the Mark 37 torpedo.\n\nThe Royal Canadian Navy started an upgrade program (SOUP) in the late 1970s to extend the lifetime of the ships into the 1980s and 1990s, with the first ship being upgraded starting in 1980. This added Mark 48 capability, although Mark 48 torpedoes would not be delivered until the 1990s, and the interim Mk-37C/E torpedo was used instead for the duration of the Cold War.
