Description
Developed during World War II as a small seaplane tender for the US Navy, the Barnegat-class was quickly outdated thanks to the decline of the seaplane post war. As a result, many were decommissioned. However those that stayed in service went on to become survey vessels or patrol and/or training vessels in foreign navies such as Ethiopia, Italy, Norway, South Vietnam, and the Philippines. Eighteen were also transferred to the US Coast Guard where they became the Casco-class cutter. In Philippine service, these ships were upgraded with a flight deck and mounts for Harpoon antiship missiles, although these were never installed in peacetime they could easily be mounted at the onset of war.
