Description
Four Virginia-class were commissioned for the USN between 1976 and 1980, these 10000 ton plus ships were double-enders for both missiles and medium-calibre guns. They are extremely expensive to operate but very powerful. In the mid 1980s, all four ships were upgraded to carry Tomahawk ABL launchers (replacing the helicopter hangar) and were refitted with Phalanx CIWS and SM-2MR under CG/SM-2, being the only Tartar-armed ship class to be fitted with SM-2 before the NTU program.
