Description
Originally intended as a large multi-national NATO project to counter Soviet FACs (such as the Osa-class), the Pegasus class hydrofoils could reach speeds up to 50 knots and carried eight RGM-84 Harpoon missiles, along with a 76mm gun forward. After significant development issues and expense, only six of these rather unique vessels were built. In service, they performed counter-narcotics missions out of Naval Air Station Key West in Florida, never being used for their intended role of countering Warsaw Pact missile boats in NATO littorals.
