Description
The Skipjack was the first US submarine design to fully leverage the performance potential inherent in the streamlined Albacore hull shape. Compared to earlier subs, they could travel well in excess of 30 knots, rendering them immune to the anti-submarine weapons of the day. They were later upgraded with towed arrays and quieter skewback propellers, and equipment to fire the Mark 48 torpedo, though they never received Sub-Harpoon.
