Description
In 1983, Soviet Naval Aviation pilots operated Yak-38 VTOL aircraft from the decks of the civilian Ro-Ro ship Agostinho Neto, proving that appropriately outfitted merchant vessels could be used as VTOL platforms in time of war. This RoRo has been updated with improvised container shelters and a heat-resistant landing platform, with its below deck cargo storage areas converted to hangars for VTOL aircraft and helicopters. Two MANPADS launchers have been fitted above the bridge for self-defense.
