The SSQ-77A is a VLAD type (Vertical Line Array DIFAR) passive sonobuoy, designed to be a generational improvement for the original DIFAR type passive sonobuoy. This buoy has a similar architecture to the DIFAR buoy, but incorporates an extremely sensitive sonar array that allows for extremely long passive range for a sonobuoy, high capability against quiet, deep-diving targets and exhibits good performance operating in cluttered, noisy waters.\n\nThe consequence of this greater performance is the weight and cost of this buoy, meaning these are less common, and their accuracy at range is poor, so they are mostly useful for localization of submerged targets.
